Introduction:
[Brief introduction to the interview purpose and confidentiality statement]
Question 0: Family and Weekday Routine-CONTEXT
0. Can you tell me a bit about your family and what a typical weekday looks like from after school or work through dinner time?
Question 1: Dinner Decision Process-SETTING
1. Tell me about the last time you realized it was time to figure out dinner on a busy weeknight. Walk me through it—from when you first started thinking about dinner, to what was going through your mind, to what you ultimately planned to do.
Follow-up:
- Where were you, who was around, and what was happening right before it hit you that it was time to decide?
Question 2: Roles in Dinner Preparation
2. When that moment comes (figuring out what’s for dinner) who usually takes the lead on deciding what to make? And who takes it from there? (groceries, meal prep, cooking)
Follow-up:
- Is that always the same person, or does it change depending on the day?
- Do you ever switch roles?
Question 3: Decision-Making Steps
3. Walk me through step-by-step how you decided what to make: who said or did what first, what did you check (to help make your decision), and how did the decision evolve from your first idea to what you actually ended up eating. What moments felt easy or hopeful, and where did it start to feel like you had to pivot or compromise?
Follow-up:
- Do you usually plan ahead or decide on the spot?
- What helps vs. adds stress?
Question 4: Timing and Triggers
4. When do you usually start thinking about dinner, and what tends to trigger that thought? (State of mind and situational readiness)
Follow-up:
- Are there certain times or cues that make it feel easier to get started?
Question 5: Handling Disruptions
5. A) Tell me about a recent time when your original dinner plan fell apart. What happened next?
Follow-up:
- What threw the plan off—work, the kids’ schedules, or something else?
- How did you adapt in the moment?
- What was going through your mind as you tried to adjust?
B) What needs to be in place for you to feel confident about your dinner decision?
Question 6: Success Stories
6. Tell me about a week when dinner planning and execution went exceptionally well.
Follow-up:
- How did that feel, and what helped you keep it up?
Question 7: Recent Outcomes
7. How did dinner actually turn out the last few nights? What made it a win or a flop?
Follow-up:
- And when things didn’t go exactly as planned (say you had to change gears or improvise) can you think of a night when that went surprisingly smoothly or even felt enjoyable?
- What made that moment work for you?
- What felt satisfying, rewarding, or just ‘right’ about how it turned out?
Question 8: Recognizing Success
8. Thinking about that good week you mentioned, what made you realize it was going well?
Follow-up:
- How could you tell it was working?
